A nurse to help mom and baby in their first few days

A health department nurse makes a home visit to see infant and mother within a few days after the baby is born.

In addition to checking the health of mother and child, nurses can also:

  • schedule additional medical appointments
  • answer questions about child care
  • give breastfeeding guidance
  • provide birth control, if needed

This service is available to eligible families and is covered by some Medicaid plans. Women should ask their doctor to make a referral or write an order for the visit.
